What’s Happening at the Memorial Society

With summer rapidly coming to a close, we at the Memorial Society are looking forward to another busy year. Board committees have been established and are now actively pursuing a number of initiatives including seeking opportunities to increase MSED revenue sources; enhancing MSED public awareness; expanding our MSED sponsored special event presentations and negotiating new funeral provider contracts.

To be successful, we ask for your support. Are you able to assist the Society with our fundraising endeavours? Do you have social media skills to assist in our public awareness efforts? Are you a member of a club or organization who would like to hear about the advantages of MSED membership? Will you pass the MSED message to friends and relatives? Will you give us your suggestions for how we can better serve you? Just a little of your time and talent will go far in the ongoing success of the Society.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The success and positive member feedback from our previous sponsored events have encouraged us to expand the number of planned presentations for the upcoming year. We encourage your attendance and welcome family and friends. Should you have a topic you would be interested in, notify the MSED office and we will endeavour to arrange an event.

Please join us and your fellow Society members at the following MSED sponsored events planned over the next few months.

On September 19th, we will be sponsoring in conjunction with RBC an information seminar “What You Need to Know About Being an Executor.” This is a follow-up to our March 7th presentation and will expand on the duties and responsibilities of an executor. An Estate Trust Advisor and a Lawyer will guide us through what you need to know before you accept the responsibility of the role of executor or appoint the executor of your own estate. Attend with your executor, family member or friend who would benefit from this comprehensive presentation on the nature of an executor’s role, highlighting duties and obligations and providing insights on estate planning. Register early. Space is limited.

Back by popular demand is a repeat of an earlier presentation. If you missed that one be sure to register for this important and interesting event. On October 4th, we will be joined by representatives of Alberta Health Services and the Office of the Public Guardian for a presentation on Advance Care Planning”. This is the process of thinking about and documenting your wishes for future care and sharing this information with the person/people you want to speak on your behalf should you be unable to do so. This session will provide you with more detailed information about your Personal Directive and your Goals of Care Designation. Your Personal Directive designates someone to make personal decisions on your behalf in the event you are unable to do so because of illness or injury. Your Goals of Care Designation is a medical order to communicate your wishes for your general aim or focus of care.

On November 8th, our event topic will be “Recognizing Healthy Boundaries”. This is part of the Seniors Financial Empowerment Network series which highlights how to recognize and develop healthy boundaries around your finances with family and friends. The presenter is a Seniors Protection Partnership Community Development Social Worker, City of Edmonton.
